Bono was born and raised in Chicago and has been interested in art and
architecture from childhood. Don says, “I’m half Italian, half Irish and
all artist.”
Over the years Don’s work was displayed mostly in the homes and offices of relatives and friends. In 1975 however, he designed a poster titled Chicago: The City That Works. He presented it to the mayor who proclaimed the work “The Chicago Poster.” Tens of thousands sold at art fairs, festivals and bookstores. That poster and other drawings of his are now displayed in restaurants and offices across America including Ditka’s, Jilly’s, Gibsons and the Chicago Way in Los Angeles, to name a few. You will also find his work at The Chicago Bar and Grill in London, at The Pines in Nicolosi, Sicily, McCarthy’s Bar in Barcelona and the Neile in County Mayo, Ireland. After a career in real estate, Don retired to his first love — art. His first commission was to draw portraits of movie stars such as Bogart, Monroe, Grant and Hepburn. Restaurant visitors and patrons liked what they saw and started to purchase Don’s work and hire him to draw their own portraits. In the following years with hundreds of completed portraits, Don became knownas “the man of a thousand faces.” Growing up, depending on which grandparents he was visiting, the house beverage was either homemade Chianti or Irish coffee. Those fond memories led to Don’s decision to create this book featuring his favorite and most interesting store fronts of Italian restaurants and Irish pubs. Also included are the incredible true stories of immigrant families coming to America and their struggles to survive. They are Chicago’s Legends, Treasures and Dreams. Don resides in Chicago with his wife Eleanor and has a daughter, Daniela, who lives in Philadelphia. |
